COACHELLA VALLEY RESIDENT SURVEY RESULTS

In September, Visit Greater Palm Springs commissioned a survey of six of our nine cities, as well as unincorporated areas like Bermuda Dunes, to identify current public sentiment and effective communication strategies for our local community regarding short-term vacation rentals (STVRs).

The research results provided a positive outlook for vacation rentals in our community. The stats below highlight Coachella Valley voters’ beliefs about STVRs and the tourism industry in their communities:

  • 72% feel favorably about STVRs in their city/community.
  • 77% become more likely to increase support for STVRs after hearing the revenues generated by STVRs support police, fire, and teacher salaries.
  • Boosting local tourism, generating additional income for residents, and supporting retail/restaurants are the leading benefits of STVRs in their city/community.
  • Of the 19% that feel opposed to STVRs in their city, neighborhood disruption, safety, and housing costs are the primary concerns.
  • 45% prefer to receive information through social media, such as Nextdoor, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter (X) about their local government and community issues.

VRMA TOURISM ECONOMICS WEBINAR

The Dangers of a 15% STVR Tax in California

Monday, December 11 at 12:00 PM PT

The Vacation Rental Management Association (VRMA) recently engaged Tourism Economics—an Oxford Economics company who researches the effects of industries in specific markets—to conduct a study to quantify the significance of the short-term vacation rental visitor economy in California.

The results of this study show the substantial negative economic impact a short-term rental tax increase would have on California tourism and the ultimate decline in jobs and loss in wages over 10 years.

Join VRMA and Aran Ryan of Tourism Economics online for an exclusive webinar to learn more about the study, the economic implications of increased short-term rental taxes on the STVR industry in California, and more.

LEVERAGING SUSTAINABILITY TO ATTRACT VISITORS

Greater Palm Springs is attracting visitors who are prioritizing sustainable travel. The Kind Traveler 2022 Impact Tourism Report revealed that more than 97% of travelers shared the importance of spending their vacation dollars in a way that positively impacts the communities they visit. Vacation rental owners and property managers can leverage visitors' support for eco-conscious lodging by investing in sustainable amenities and giveback opportunities for travelers.

Home improvements that reduce resource consumption may be eligible for tax credits and rebates. Utility costs can be decreased by using energy-efficient appliances, solar panels, and low-water use irrigation systems. Homes that exceed usage regulations may be subject to fines and penalties. Energy audits can be conducted by homeowners to calculate their carbon footprint.
